A leading hospital implemented Triiota, Chenoa’s emonitoring IoT solution, which helped increase patient safety while saving hundreds of thousands of dollars.

The Problem

A leading hospital was dealing with an expensive failure of refrigeration. These refrigerators stored vital vaccines needed to treat patients. The failure was a simple one. The unit’s door was not closed properly, and there was no automated temperature monitoring to alert the staff. It failed over a weekend, so the problem was not discovered until the following Monday morning, and over $30,000 worth of medication was lost – not to mention that patients had to reschedule their appointments. This was not the first time this happened, but this event served as the catalyst that started this journey into IoT.  What was needed? A comprehensive solution that would monitor temperature throughout the hospital, alert staff on exceptions, provide compliance reporting for agencies like the CDC and the Joint Commission, and set the stage for asset tracking.

The Triiota Approach

The approach was to utilize our IoT deployment model and leverage our IoT management platform, Triiota. By utilizing our IoT deployment model we were able to identify sensors that could handle multiple and complex temperature use cases, including ultra-low freezers and laboratory water baths. Our platform is a cloud-based solution that can adapt to any IoT use case that accelerates deployment, simplifies management and maximizes return on investment. Utilizing Triiota gateways, sensors were activated and connected through an LPWAN network rapidly and flawlessly. All data was captured and delivered into a repository were Triiota enabled compliance reporting and analytics. The next step was to integrate alerting through Triiota’s API providing real-time messaging on temperature and humidity exceptions.

The Results

Our project was a success – we saved the hospital hundreds of thousands of dollars in lost medications and over 400 hours annually in preparing compliance reports. Patient safety also increased as there is virtually no risk of providing non-compliant drugs to patients. At this point, sensors are monitoring temperature and humidity throughout the entire facility, including pharmacy, labs, treatment rooms, storage, and IT closets. With Triiota’s dashboard, the hospital team members have a visual status of the devices and sensors that are out of range – it also alerts staff, and if unanswered, escalates to a Department Manager or Director. Triiota also shows and alerts sensors that need to be re-calibrated (a regulatory requirement), or needs their battery replaced. It is a solution that was accepted and praised by leaders across the entire organization. Having solved hospital environment monitoring, our team then leveraged the investment in the network and Triiota by implementing asset tracking for high-cost equipment, increasing and expediting the return on investment for the Triiota system.
