A significant number of electronic health records (EHR) systems have complex workflows that are time-consuming and click intensive for physicians and their administrative staff. Addressing this challenge would seem straightforward, but often most EHRs have legacy technology that limits the ability to change and streamline the user experience. Through our Product Engineering practice, our team modernized our client’s EHR UI technology and user workflow design.

A learned approach to priority setting & classification

(research from Stanford Medicine conducted with The Harris Poll – 2018)

The Problem

Like many other EHR product companies, our clientworkflows were hampered by constantly changing compliance requirements regardless of how they impacted productivity. Over time this resulted in death by a thousand clicks for doctors and their administrative staff. Realizing the challenge as an opportunity, our client engaged with our Product Engineering team to help in modernizing their user interface to significantly reduce time spent in the EHR and combat physician burnout.

The Approach

The operational scope of our engagement was comprehensive and ambitious. It included redesigning the UI for patient outreach, intake, admissions, clinical, medication management and billing processes. The challenge was to ensure that the system was rearchitected to support access from any platform with an intuitive user interface while maintaining database architecture and integrity. Our team focused on transforming the UI’s technical foundation using modern technologies while simultaneously reimagining the user workflows to dramatically improve usability.

The Results

From a physician’s perspective, they are chiefly focused on the care they deliver to their patients. They seek and need tools that can help them capture critical clinical information and do so in an effective and streamlined manner.  The result of our work was a 50% reduction in screens and clicks for our client’s doctors, streamlining clinical data capture and enabled the advancement of new EHR features that increased their market share.
